When Faith Turns to Heresy

Pastor Mykhaylo Khromyak

Human nature is predisposed to falling into extremes. A person coming from a situation of poverty will often welcome the idea that God’s purpose is to make them wealthy in this life. A person who has experienced persecution and suffering will often gravitate to the idea that God has called them to positions of authority and influence in society. The Gospel however is not about extremes but about restoring balance and order; the path of which is often fraught with bias. Our experiences, achievements, losses, and pain influence the way we read the Bible and practice our faith. One sees value in being poor while another emphasizes the need for financial prosperity. One group appreciates suffering as a means of spiritual growth, while for others, being physically healthy is God’s primary purpose. For some, the world is desperately evil and has no hope except for the coming authority of Christ, while others believe that we need to reclaim dominion and usher in the millennial rule of Christ. Is faith is about loyalty or is it about authority? These are only a few examples of some of the extremes or heresies that we encounter.
